DIY Watermark Tee

Friday, June 15, 2012

This is arguably one of my favorite projects 'ever'! I am so excited today to show you my version of the Watermark Tee. You are going to love this method of tie dye as you can customize it any way your heart desires!!

I found this excellent idea through Pinterest via Sweet Verbena blog. I was so inspired that I just had to try it out for myself and it turned out perfectly!

Let's jump right into today's tutorial shall we?

DIY Watermark Tee

To begin you will want to collect a few necessary items for the dye process: a plain white tee (100% cotton), a box of RIT dye, a lid from a bin or some other plastic item to stretch the shirt over, and Elmer's blue gel glue. You MUST use the blue glue otherwise this project will not work.
(Notice that the blue glue is not pictured here... That's because the first time I tried this I did it wrong. Yikes.)

A quick note about the blue gel: I couldn't find it ANYWHERE! Seriously, I checked about every store in my town and no one carried it. 'Until'..... my favorite variety store on earth, Spring Grove Variety Store in Owosso, ordered some for me! A huge shout out to Spring Grove for being so awesome. Thanks again guys.

Prep It

Start by thoroughly wetting the tee in cold water. Ring it out and then stretch it over the storage bin lid.

Design It

Next you will design the tee however you'd like using your blue Elmer's glue. You can write your favorite quote or scripture verse like I did. You can also draw designs or shapes. I chose this scripture from Proverbs 31:10-12

"A wife of noble character who can find?
She is worth far more than rubies.
Her husband has full confidence in her
and lacks nothing of value.
She brings him good, not harm,
all the days of her life."

And yes, you want to write on the shirt with the glue while the tee is still damp. Let everything dry 'completely'. This may take several hours. I waited a whole day.

Dye it

Your dye bath should be prepared in cold water. That is important to know. Just play around with the amount of dye you add. Keep playing with the color until you like the pigment. Place the shirt in the dye and move it around in the color for a few minutes or until it's completely saturated. *Don't forget gloves.

Once you've finished dyeing, stretch the shirt back over the lid to dry 'completely' once again.

Wash It & Wear It!

Before you stick it in the washer, let the tee soak in cold soapy water for at least 15 minutes. This will help remove the excess glue and dye from the shirt. You might want to wash the tee by itself the first time. The dye is very potent.

You're finished! Time to wear it and rock it!!

Isn't that fun!? Now it's your turn to try it. :) I plan on making some more cute tee designs using this method so stay tuned for those updates. I can't wait to show you all of them.
